Healthy Recipe: Chocolate Orange Protein Shake

Do you remember those chocolates that were shaped like orange slices? Well, if you liked those, you will love this shake! (WARNING: This flavor is NOT for everyone!! If you don’t like chocolate oranges, really, don’t bother trying this shake. You won’t like it!)

Chocolate Orange Protein Shake
INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup almond milk (unsweetened original)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/2 packet of Stevia (or to taste)

DIRECTIONS

Mix all ingredients together in a blender and enjoy!

Healthy Recipe – Grilled Apples

Need something sweet but healthy too? It’s grilling season, so after you make those burgers, throw some apples on the grill and you’ve got a great dessert!

Grilled Apples

Grilled Apples
makes 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 apples, cored and halved
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon stevia

DIRECTIONS

Preheat grill.

Combine the water and lemon juice in a bowl. Soak the apples in the water and lemon juice mixture. Set aside.

Combine the cinnamon and stevia in a bowl. (I then pour this mixture into an empty spice shaker, but you don’t have to do that.) Set aside.

Remove apples from water mixture and place on the grill. Cook on medium heat, grilling about 6-7 minutes on each side. Remove from grill and place on a pan, sprinkling with the cinnamon and stevia mixture.

I eat these plain when eating healthy, but if not, top with whipped cream or ice cream and serve!

3 Day Refresh: In Conclusion

The last day of the 3 Day Refresh plan was easy because I knew it was the last day. I was never hungry on the program at all, which was surprising to me. I think because it’s not just shakes, but also tea and some various fruits and veggies too. Because of that, I actually felt like I was constantly eating or drinking something. It makes it easier to get through because you always know there’s another thing to eat or drink in a few hours. I did great getting my water in on the last day, and that helped a ton as well.

And now, the big question…how much weight did I lose? 3.5 pounds in the 3 days! I’m VERY happy with that. But more importantly, I feel really good. I have a ton of energy, and I feel like this sets me up to really eat healthy this weekend, because I don’t want to ruin all this great progress!

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to do a quick jumpstart to a healthy eating lifestyle!

3-day-Refresh

3 Day Refresh: Day 2

Quick update today on the 3 Day Refresh — I’m swamped with school starting in a few days so I don’t have time to write much but I wanted to check in quick and give my impressions of the second day.

Today went great! It’s basically just a repeat of yesterday, so easy to follow. I did cheat again today and have one cup of coffee, but at least I didn’t have two!! I had to work through lunch, so I was very appreciative of having the shake to drink quickly so I could get back to work.

The nice thing about it being only 3 days is that I KNOW I need to stick to it because there’s only 1 day left and I have to make it count. I was super busy at work, so I had a hard time getting all my water in today, so I’m off to go drink my tea!

3 Day Refresh: Day 1

It’s here, it’s here, it’s here! Today I began the 3 Day Refresh program. This is part of the suite of products that I sell as a Beachbody Coach, and I’ve been dying to try it since it came out a few months ago. It’s meant to be a 3 day cleanse and jumpstart to weight loss. Since I’ve been working to lose weight for the past 3 and a half months, the weight loss has definitely slowed down and there’s been a bit of a plateau. I know this is natural, but it can also be a little demotivating. So I thought this program would be a good way to sort of start over and recommit to eating healthy, keeping my motivation high because I haven’t reached my goal weight yet.

3-day-Refresh

The basic idea around the plan is that you have 4 shakes per day plus some fruits, veggies, and tea. The shakes include Shakeology, Fiber Sweep, and two Vanilla Fresh shakes.

So day one is over, and I’m ready to head to bed. I haven’t been hungry at all, which is great! The shakes are very filling, and the amount of fruit and veggies you get besides the shake is actually more than I was expecting for a cleanse. Here’s a rundown on each of the shakes:

  • Shakeology – I drank my regular Chocolate Shakeology even though the cleanse recommends the Vegan Chocolate. I didn’t want to buy a bag of the vegan just for a 3 day cleanse. Obviously I love this shake because I drink it every morning!! For the purpose of the cleanse you are supposed to mix it with water, which I of course read AFTER I’d already had my morning shake today. So today, I had mixed mine with a cup of almond milk like I always do. Hope that doesn’t mess up the plan too much!!
  • Fiber Sweep – A friend of mine had tried this shake and told me it was terrible, awful, horrible. Based on that description, I was prepared for the worst. I was ready to chug it like crazy and even plug my nose if I had to! Surprisingly (and probably because I was prepared for it to taste like garbage) it was not bad at all! It had a light lemony taste. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t choose this as a beverage if I was heading out to the deck to relax for the evening, but it was definitely acceptable and I won’t dread tomorrow’s shake. I drank it quickly though because it gets thicker the longer it stands, and it can get sludgy pretty fast.
  • Vanilla Fresh – I’m kind of torn on my feelings about this shake. While I didn’t mind it, I prefer the regular Vanilla Shakeology to this one. I tasted a bit more mineral flavor than I think the Vanilla Shakeology has. Still, it was a perfectly acceptable shake and I certainly won’t dread drinking it again tomorrow.

I’m going to be honest, I haven’t followed the plan to the letter. In addition to accidentally drinking almond milk in my Shakeology this morning, I also DRANK COFFEE, which you aren’t supposed to do on the program. I was SOOOO tired this morning when I woke up! But I only had one small cup, which is better than the 20 ounces I’ve been drinking per day normally since my son was born! Tomorrow and the next day, I will try to skip the coffee and drink the tea instead.

Also, you aren’t supposed to work out while doing the cleanse, but I broke that rule too. I did PiYo Sculpt, which isn’t super aerobic but more strength, so I am hoping that doesn’t make too much of a difference. Hmmmm, seems like I’m breaking a lot of rules here…

In conclusion, I’m still really liking this so far, but even if I wasn’t, there’s only two days left! The true test will be if I’ve lost any weight at the end of the 3 days! More tomorrow!

Recipe – Chicken Salad

CHICKEN SALAD

My sister asked me for this recipe, so you all get the benefit since I had to type it up anyway! It’s seriously one of my favorite recipes, and I hope you love it too! I believe the bacon and the mayo qualify this recipe for the not-so-healthy list, unfortunately. But it’s so so good!

Quick & Easy Chicken Salad

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups cubed (1/2 inch) cooked chicken (about 1 3/4 pound)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup bacon, fried and chopped
  • 2 cups halved seedless red grapes
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

DIRECTIONS

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. That’s it! You can eat it right away, but it’s better if you cover and refrigerate for at least an hour to let the flavors meld together.

Serve on a lettuce leaf, croissants, dollar buns, or bread of your choice!

NOTE: Like many of my recipes, this recipe is VERY forgiving. Add more of the ingredients you like, add less of the things you don’t! Don’t like walnuts? Use almonds or cashews. I’ve used both and they are great! Too dry? Add more mayo! You really can’t go wrong!
